How to determine which first-year writing class to register for

Students may fulfill pre-requisite requirements to enroll in a First Year Writing course (English 1010) in several ways. The following flow chart is designed to help guide students in identifying and enrolling in their first-year writing classes.
Do I need to Take the Self-Directed English Placement Survey? Start Here! 1? Did you take college-level English courses at another institution? (This includes concurrent enrollment courses) If yes, do the following: • Look over the Transfer Credit Evaluation page http://bit.ly/3OPbCVK on MSU Denver’s site. • Visit MSU Denver’s “Send It” page http://bit.ly/3SDBuoA to see how to submit your transcripts. If no, move on to question 2. 2. Do you have prior English-related AP, CLEP, or IB scores? If yes, do the following: • Check the “Alternative Credit Options/Prior Learning Assessment” tab in the academic catalog http://bit.ly/3uPLFyuto determine how your AP scores transfer to MSU Denver. • Visit College Board’s website http://bit.ly/3UMVB6t to send your scores to MSU Denver. MSU Denver’s School Code is 4505 • Visit the International Baccalaureate IB website http://www.ibo.org/ to send your scores to MSU Denver. If no, move on to question 3. 3. Do you have SAT or ACT test scores? If yes, do the following: SAT • SAT Scores below 470 cannot be used for placement. • With an SAT score of 470 or higher, email the English Department your SAT score report to register for ENG 1010. • With an SAT score of 620 or higher, email the English Department your SAT score report to register for ENG 1020 • SAT Scores expire after five years. ACT • ACT Scores below 18 cannot be used for placement. • With an ACT score of 18 or higher, email the English Department your ACT score report to register for ENG 1010. • With an ACT score of 27 or higher, email the English Department your ACT score report to register for ENG 1020 • ACT Scores expire after five years. If no, take the 5-10 minute English Self-Directed Placement Survey http://bit.ly/3UMVRCt. You will get your score upon completion.
